A Roundup of Some of Charleston’s Best B&Bs

What could be more charming than a stay at a Charleston B&B? Not only are you surrounded by the history and charm of Charleston’s downtown, you’re actually waking up in it. I love that bed & breakfasts offer a great way to truly immerse yourself in the place you’re visiting. Personally I choose a B&B when I can because they just feel so much more intimate and relaxing. Add on to that the fact that in a Charleston B&B you can surround yourself with the luxury of a beautifully furnished room, many of which date back over a century – with high ceilings, antique decor, and the best of southern hospitality.

I’ve put together a list of some of my favorite B&Bs in Charleston with a range of prices to fit a variety of pocketbooks. Not sure if your travel budget can stretch to accommodate a stay at one of these luxurious inns? Consider booking a one or two night stay at one of these B&Bs and then check out other local hotels for the remainder of your stay for the best of both worlds!

The Jasmine House

Situated in the heart of downtown in Charleston’s South of Broad district, The Jasmine House provides easy access to all that Charleston has to offer. The inn is located in one of Charleston’s historic mansions with rooms boasting hardwood floors, cozy fireplaces, and period furnishings. You can enjoy breakfast on their spacious veranda, or relax in the private courtyard. Bonus feature: They host a wine and cheese reception every evening for their guests.

John Rutledge House Inn

This unique and gorgeous inn was home to John Rutledge, one of the signers of the US Constitution and was voted the #1 Best Hotel in Charleston and #12 in the U.S. by Travel + Leisure. The John Rutledge House Inn is absolutely exquisite inside and out with stand-out exterior features like the teal colored wrought iron and the black and white checkered sidewalk. And if the beautiful surroundings weren’t enough to entice you, the exceptional hospitality will do the trick. They offer a delicious continental or cooked breakfast brought to your room or served in the ballroom or courtyard, afternoon tea and hors d’oeuvres every afternoon, a selection of port, sherry, and brandy every evening, and a nightly chocolate to accompany the turndown service.

1837 Bed & Breakfast

The main house of 1837 B&B is a three-story Federal style home built in 1798. Each of the six guest rooms has a queen canopy rice bed, fireplace, and beautiful furnishings. If you’ve never heard of a Charleston rice bed you can read all about them here. The site also includes a charming carriage house with three additional rooms, two of which feature exposed brick walls and wood-beam ceilings for a truly historic feel.

86 Cannon Historic Inn

If you’re looking for some time away without the kids and really want to stretch the luxury of your quiet, kid-free time to its full potential, you should check out 86 Cannon. The property design is a perfect blend of Charleston and European elements, and is one of the few adult-only properties downtown. So you can exchange your toy-strewn living room for classically beautiful surroundings, and true peace and quiet!

Also, the Loft King room shown below may be my personal favorite room:

20 South Battery

Last, but most certainly not least, is 20 South Battery. Situated on the Battery in downtown Charleston, directly across from White Point Gardens, this once privately owned mansion turned boutique hotel embodies the best of Charleston’s history and charm. The attention to historic detail is phenomenal and the location can’t be beat. For you locals, they offer a staycation package deal that includes your room accommodations and a $100 food credit to S.N.O.B. Yes, please!

So what do you think? Are you ready to book your next trip to Charleston yet?? I’d love to hear about your travel plans, and if you’ve stayed at any of these B&Bs already let me know about your experience! Happy traveling everyone!
